Sul vino

Istra has been a wine-growing region even before Christ. A Roman stone monument from the year 75 (stela) with a relief of a grapegatherer tells us about that tradition. By the end of the 19th century an Agricultural Institute with a wine cellar was founded. Wine and “rakija” made from grape draff (so-called wine brandy) are the local alcoholic beverages. Among the white wines, the native Istrian malvazija, White and Grey Pinnot, Sauvignon and Chardonay stand out. Among the red wines there is Borgonja, Merlot, Refošk, Cabarnet and Ružičasta Hrvatica. Among the dessert wines, Slata Malvazija and Muškat (red and white) are popular. Recently, a greater selection of local quality champagne is offered. Very often aromatic herbs and all kinds of fruits are added to the grapebrandy like rue which is the most popular brandy.

CHARDONNAY This sort originates in the Champagne province in France. Due to its outstanding quality, it is the most highly prized white wine in the world. It is now produced on all continents, and has done remarkably well in the Porec climate. The wine has characteristic bouquet and is easy to recognize by tasting, which makes it very popular. It is served at a temperature of 12 Celsius degree with fish and white meat PINOT GRAY (Rulander) Pinot gray is a wine of excellent quality. It is harmonious, and is unctuous on the palate because of its low acid content and pleasant aroma. This is a sort grown in northern regions, and in the Porec area is yields a wine with more alcohol and more color. Today it is the most popular sort in Croatia. It is served at a temperature of 12 Celsius degree.
PINOT WHITE This sort is grown in the continental part of Europe, and has become domesticated in the Porec wine growing hills. It produces an excellent wine with a rather high alcohol content and dark color. The wine has a characteristic bouquet reminiscent of almonds. It is served at a temperature of 12 Celsius degree with fish and meat. MALMSEY The ‘vernacular’ wine of the Porec wine-growing region. In Istria, a love for this wine is handed down from generation to generation. It is yellowish green in color and has a characteristic flavor and fragrance reminiscent of locust-tree blossoms. It goes with meat, fish and cold dishes, always cooled to 12 Celsius degree.
MALMSEY SWEET Malmsey is a traditional sort in this region. The grapes for this wine? are picked a month after the normal vintage. The very mature grapes, ripened by the Porec sun are used to produce a wine that is fully extracted with 16 vol % alcohol and 8% unfermented sugar. It is recommended with desserts served at a temperature between 14 C and 16 C degrees. CABERNET SAUVIGNON This sort provides the major contribution to the quality of red wines from Bordeaux. It is produced in all wine-growing countries worldwide and always yields the best quality wines. In the Porec wine-growing region it yields excellent wines that have won the highest awards. This king of red wines is drunk at a temperature 4 degrees below the ambient temperature, but not lower than 15 degree or higher than 25 degree. It is especially good with dark meat and game.
MERLOT This French sort originating in Bordeaux is well-known worldwide as a grape used to make top-quality red wines. It was first planted in Porec wine growing hills in the early 70s and has now become the most sought after wine from this region. The wine is regularly of a high quality with a char act eristic bouquet. It goes well with game and red meat. The serving temperature must be somewhat lower than the ambient temperature but not lower than 15 Celsius degree or higher than 25 Celsius degree. BORGOGNE It is not widely known that this sort yields the wine known in France under the name of Beaujolais. It was brought to the Porec wine growing region from France in the 18th century under Napoleon, and was readily accepted by local producers. Their efforts have been amply rewarded. Bourgogne wine is red, with a rich bouquet, and is very harmonious. Due to its low alcohol content and medium acidity it is very drinkable and goes with various dishes, even those that usually requires white win. It is served at a temperature of 15 to 18 Celsius degree.
TERAN This is the most important wine sort in thug history of red wine production in Istria and Porec area. It is an autochthones sort and is unique for its high total acids content. There are few wines in the world with this level of acidity, which gives the wine an elixir-like effect on the human organism. The medicinal properties of Teran were well known as far back as in Roman times. It is excellent with all fatty foods served at a temperature of 16 to 18 Celsius degree.
