International Slow Food Award 2023.

The traditional delicacy known as Vrsar amaretti has gained international recognition as a valuable example of preserving local gastronomic heritage. The revitalization project of this indigenous dessert, led by the Vrsar Tourist Board, was awarded the prestigious Internatural Slow Food Award in 2023, confirming its significance in safeguarding traditional knowledge, local ingredients, and the culinary identity of the destination.

Vrsar amaretti represent a unique variation of Mediterranean amaretti, adapted to local agroecological conditions. Unlike the more widely known Italian versions made from almonds, the Vrsar tradition is based on hazelnuts, once a widespread crop in the Vrsar area and its surroundings. This distinctive feature gives the dessert its recognizable flavor and firmly connects it to the local landscape, agriculture, and culinary heritage.

The revitalization project was initiated with the aim of preserving an almost forgotten recipe and reintegrating it into contemporary community life. Through research of oral traditions, collection of traditional recipes, and collaboration with local pastry chefs and residents, an authentic recipe has been restored and is now presented as part of the town’s identity and its tourism offering.

The Internatural Slow Food Award represents recognition of a project that successfully combines the preservation of tradition, sustainable use of local resources, and the development of cultural tourism. Initiatives like this demonstrate how gastronomic heritage can serve as a powerful tool for strengthening local identity, fostering community cohesion, and creating authentic visitor experiences.

Today, Vrsar amaretti are not merely a dessert—they are a symbol of continuity between past and present, illustrating how traditional knowledge can be preserved, reinterpreted, and presented to new generations through modern models of promotion and sustainable destination development.
