Already in June, a marked bloom of the sea has been noticed in the northern Adriatic. It is a natural phenomenon, which occurs cyclically in the Adriatic and other seas when phytoplankton (plant plankton) grows suddenly and rapidly due to favorable meteorological and oceanological conditions.
The occurrence is particularly frequent and intense in areas with favorable biological conditions such as the northern Adriatic.
The first recorded bloom of the sea in the northern Adriatic dates back to 1746, and since 1988 it has been recorded periodically. The years 1983, 1988, 1991, 1997, and the period from 2000 to 2004, autumn 2006, spring - summer 2024 stand out. This data shows us that it is a cyclical recurring natural phenomenon.
It is important to note that although it can be uncomfortable, swimming in the sea with algae is not harmful to bathers. According to the Regulation on sea bathing water quality (Official Gazette 73/2008), the occurrence of sea blooms does not pose a threat to the health of bathers.
The Teaching Institute of Public Health of the Istrian County evaluates the quality of the sea, and during the last measurement, the quality of the sea on the shores of Vrsar was rated excellent.
