During the Easter holidays, Poreč opens the doors of one of its most valuable historic sites, inviting visitors on an intimate journey through the culture of living in centuries past – also a notable cultural heritage site located just ten kilometres from Vrsar
From 30 March to 6 April 2026, between 11 am and 5 pm, visitors will have a unique opportunity to explore free of charge the permanent exhibition “Housing Culture in Poreč in the 19th and 20th Century”, set within the recently restored Romanesque House – one of the rare preserved examples of Romanesque residential architecture in Istria.
Built in the second half of the 13th century, this harmonious two-storey building of simple layout, featuring a characteristic Romanesque bifora, reflects a rich and layered history. Over the centuries, it underwent several transformations – from the addition of an արտաքին staircase between the 16th and 17th centuries to a major restoration in 1926 led by conservator Ferdinando Forlati. Following destruction during World War II, the building remained a standalone structure and became the first monument in Poreč to be restored for public use.
Today, after a comprehensive renovation completed in 2024, the Romanesque House has been revitalised as a valuable museum space under the care of the Poreč Heritage Museum. Listed in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia, it preserves stories of everyday life in Poreč across centuries.
Spanning three floors and approximately seventy square metres of exhibition space, the display offers an authentic insight into the most intimate aspects of life – from interior design to social and cultural habits – bringing the spirit of the time vividly to life.
