From a Medieval Tower to Croatia's First Permanent Casanova Exhibition
Casanova’s Sanctuary by Orsarium is housed in one of the surviving towers of Vrsar’s former defensive system. Built in the Middle Ages in the Romanesque style, the tower was for centuries part of the fortifications protecting the town’s historic centre.
Following a careful restoration in 2017, the tower was given a new purpose and transformed into Croatia's firs permanent exhibition dedicated to the stays of the renowned Venetian adventurer, writer and legendary seducer Giacomo Casanova in Vrsar.

Traces of Casanova’s Stay in Vrsar
The connection between Vrsar and Giacomo Casanova is based on his own accounts in his famous Memoirs, in which he describes his travels, encounters and experiences. Casanova visited Vrsar twice – first in 1743 and again in 1744.
His first arrival in Vrsar took place in August 1743, when he was still a young, relatively unknown priest with no significant social standing. He stayed in the town for several days, recording his impressions of Vrsar as it was at the time.
A year later, he returned to Vrsar, this time as a soldier, travelling from the direction of the Venetian island of Malamocco. The ship he was travelling on anchored off the coast of Vrsar to replenish its ballast supplies during the night. The vessel carried 24 cannons and 200 Slavic soldiers. In his writings, Casanova described the contrast between his first and second visits – from a modest young priest to a man in a striking military uniform whom he believed no one would have recognized.

Today, Casanova’s Sanctuary by Orsarium brings Vrsar’s historical connection with Giacomo Casanova to life through a permanent exhibition dedicated to the facts and stories surrounding his stays in the town.
Through informational content and the authentic atmosphere of the medieval tower, visitors can discover Vrsar from the perspective of one of the best-known travellers of the 18th century.
The centre also offers locally made souvenirs featuring motifs inspired by Vrsar and Giacomo Casanova – a lasting reminder of a story that brings together the history, culture and identity of the town.
