The first material traces of Christianity in Vrsar can be discerned since the IV century and are cause - effect related to the enactment of the Edict of Milan, although it is possible that Christian communities in Vrsar existed even earlier but as illegal and hidden.

The presence of the first Christians in Vrsar is also reflected in the titulars of the oldest churches: the Mother of God in the Vrsar harbour (called the Basilica of St. Mary of the Sea), is dedicated to the oldest titular recognized in late antiquity; and Sv. Juraj (St. George) the first Christian saint and martyr.
